In the United States, an estimated 70% of heavy metals in landfills come from discarded electronics Only 10% of old computers or electronics are recycled properly. In 2005 alone it is estimated that 163,420 computers will become obsolete and approximately 274,000 cell phones will be disposed in the U.S. daily. Based on conservative estimates, between 2006 and 2015 another 680 million computers and laptops will be sold in the U.S.
PCs, monitors, and other electronics contain hazardous wastes such as barium, beryllium, mercury, lead and many other hazardous materials. It is important to keep these hazardous materials out of landfills where they can leach into the groundwater. When you recycle, these materials are reused.
